Also known as verruca, warts are caused by a virus that invades the skin through small lacerations or abrasions. Warts typically appear on the sole (plantar warts) but can appear anywhere on the foot. Warts are infectious and can spread by touching or scratching. Warts have a finite life span of anywhere from six months up to five years.

A plantar wart is a flat, hard lump on the bottom of your foot. The warts are most common in people 12 to 16 years of age, and may last for many years.

Causes: The warts are caused by a virus called the human papillomavirus (PAP-ih-LOW-muh-VI-russ), or HPV.
